Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, is a surgical operation where excess skin and fatty tissue is removed from the front of the tummy (abdomen). This is usually combined with tightening of the muscles with deeply placed stitches and sometimes liposuction of adjacent areas, such as the hips.

Patients suitable for abdominoplasty have often had multiple pregnancies with large babies or have had excess weight gain and weight loss. In both these situations the skin, fat and muscles have been stretched excessively and will not return to their original state.

Due to the removal of excess tissue there will be a large scar which is usually situated below the underpants line.

Abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure performed at Blackwood Hospital under a full general anaesthesia requiring one to three nights in hospital following surgery.
